Photos of Fort Vellore. The fort was built "in the third quarter of the 16th century" by Vijayanagar client kings (Bomma Reddy Nayak and Thimma Reddy Nayak). The Jalakanteswara temple within the fort walls was built a few decades earlier. The British took it over in the 18th century. On July 10th 1806 the first Indian Mutiny, called the "Vellore Mutiny" happened here (50 years before the rest of the country caught up). Tipu Sultan and his family were imprisoned here around that time.
